Is tutoring help available?
Goodwin College provides a Learning Resource Center in Room 209 at the River Campus to help students with their mathematics, reading, and writing skills. Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 am. - 7:00 pm. and Saturdays 9:00 am. - 12:00 pm (noon). Other tutoring sessions can be arranged by appointment.
Is there reference help available?
The library staff is available to help you in person, by phone, or email. A new mobile service, Text-A-Librarian, has started where patron can ask questions from their cell phone. Instructors also schedule classes in the library to prepare you for specific research assignments.
I need a computer. Can Goodwin College help me?

How do I save files in the library?
Goodwin Library highly recommends using flash drives (also called thumb or jump drives). NO LOST RESEARCH PAPERS OR LAB REPORTS! None of the library computers can read a floppy disk and compact discs are unreliable. Flash drives are available in the Goodwin College Bookstore.
Is there a copy machine in the library?
There is one coin operated copy machine in the library. Each page is ten cents for students. Change for coins and dollar bills is available.
How can I check out a book?
You will need your student ID card. If you are a currently enrolled student or alumni of Goodwin College, you may check out a book for three weeks. The book my be renewed once unless another patron has a Hold on the item. Reference books and materials on the Reserve Shelf do not circulate.
The book I want is checked out. Can it be held for me when it comes back?
Yes. You can place a Hold on the book using the library catalog. You must first log into your library catalog account. If you do not have a library catalog account, please see a librarian. Then, you can click the Hold button on the details page of the book or other item. When the item returns, the library catalog will issue an alert. The item will be set aside and you will be contacted.
Can I use the library's Audio Visual Collection?
If you are a currently enrolled student, you can check out audio visual items for one week, no renewals. If the audio visual item has been placed on the Reserve Shelf by an instructor, it can be viewed in the library only. A list of audio visual items can be viewed using the library catalog. Videos and DVDs may be borrowed from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. The normal time for arrival is 7 to 10 days.
How do I know if the library owns a particular book?
Books that are owned by the Goodwin Library are in the Goodwin Library Catalog. See the link "catalog" on the Goodwin Library webpage. If you know the exact title of the book, you can select a Title search. If you know who wrote the book, you can select an Author search. If you want to know what books there are on a certain topic, you can select a Subject or Keyword search. You do not need to log into the catalog with your account to do a search of the catalog.
I'm looking for a particular journal article. How do I know if I can get that journal in this library?
A list of the journals, magazines, and newspaper subscriptions for Goodwin Library in print is available by clicking the link "Periodicals" on the Goodwin library webpage. You can also search for the journal article by clicking the link "Research Databases" on the Goodwin library webpage. On the database page click the link "A to Z Journals". In the search box, enter the name of the journal containing your particular article. A list of links of the research databases containing the desired journal will appear. You can click on any of those database links and begin your title search of the particular article.
Can I access the library's catalog and databases from home?
The Goodwin library catalog can be accessed through the internet from home without any special connection. To access our catalog of books and other materials, click on the link "catalog" on our library home page.
To access our research databases you must create a VPN on your home computer. The Goodwin Library Virtual Private Network (VPN) will give you access off campus to the library's Research Databases page, alist of all the databases you need for research.
For instructions on how to set up a VPN, click on the link "Access Databases From Home". Read all the directions on this page for setting up your account. Then, scroll down the page and click on the operating system of your computer for directions on adding a new network. If you have problems, please contact the IT Help Desk at 860-727-6743.

If I bring my laptop to the library, can I print and use the Internet?
Wireless connection is available in all parts of the library. Depending on your laptop, all you will have to do is add our printer. You can obtain the password for the wireless connection from a librarian. If you have problems with the wireless connection or printer access, see the IT department or call the IT Help Desk at 860-727-6743.
Do I have a Goodwin E-mail Account?
YES YOU DO! If your name is John Jones, your email account would be: username: jjones@student.goodwin.edu and password: your student id number (for example: 000765876). Sometimes there are duplicate username combinations (John Jones and James Jones) and the IT department must add numbers to your username. It you are having trouble logging into your email account, see the IT department or call the IT Help Desk at 860-727-6743.
